Western partners begin to put pressure on Kyiv to negotiate with Moscow: El País

Ukraine’s allies are increasing pressure on Kyiv with a call to find ways for peace negotiations and an end to the war unleashed by Russia. informs Spanish publication El País.
According to the newspaper, this pressure is confirmed by the less active support of President Volodymyr Zelensky during his last visit to the United States. Although Ukraine can continue to count on financial assistance from Washington, the United States has not yet agreed to provide long-range missiles for strikes on Russian territory.
El País notes that since the summer of this year, Russia has continued its offensive in the Donbas, and the Ukrainian Armed Forces have not been able to reverse the situation. To solve this task, according to the publication, Ukraine will need much more military aid than it has received so far.
The situation in the Middle East, especially after the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran, also diverts the West’s attention from Ukraine. In addition, the US presidential election in November is approaching, and the possible victory of Donald Trump adds uncertainty to further support for Ukraine.
The government of Ukraine openly protests against the end-of-war scenarios that involve territorial concessions. In this context, the publication mentions the proposal of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Radoslaw Sikorski, who in September proposed to transfer Crimea under the mandate of the UN and hold a referendum on its status.
Ukrainian expert Mykhailo Samus, quoted by El País, notes a change in sentiment among Ukraine’s allies. Increasingly, they talk about the need for a “pragmatic end to the war.” According to him, the US consent to Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles against Russian military facilities could seriously complicate the position of the Russian army and create conditions for negotiations. Samus emphasizes that for successful negotiations, it is necessary to weaken Russia’s position in Crimea, since providing Ukraine with access to the Black Sea is a matter of existential importance.
