As you know, in order to travel abroad, Ukrainians must have a valid foreign passport. In some cases, citizens of Ukraine choose to extend the validity of their passport instead of replacing it completely. However, in accordance with the new requirements of Schengen countries, the extended passport may not be accepted for entry into the EU. Extended foreign passport: what has changed Under the new rules, Schengen countries no longer recognize passports that have been extended as valid documents for crossing the border. This means that Ukrainians who have extended passports may be refused entry. «According to the new rules for crossing the borders of the Schengen countries, an international passport with an extended validity period is not a valid document for entry into the Schengen countries. An exception can be made only by citizens of third countries who are residents of the Schengen countries or have a long-term visa, provided that they intend to enter the territory of the Schengen country that has issued a residence permit or a long-term visa. That is, the right of entry of this category of citizens to the territory of Schengen countries is not unconditional, as it depends on the will of the official or the representative of the airline. Therefore, we would like to advise the above-mentioned category of citizens to still obtain new foreign passports directly in Ukraine before returning to the country of the Schengen zone, of which they are residents, or to obtain new foreign passports at the consular departments of Ukrainian embassies abroad or at the relevant consulates of Ukraine. As for the citizens — residents of Ukraine, it should be noted that the embassies of the member countries of the Schengen zone, which are located on the territory of Ukraine, will most likely not accept their extended foreign passport when deciding on the issue of issuing a visa. If we are talking about confirming the legality of your stay abroad with a valid foreign passport, under the conditions of martial law in Ukraine, please follow the following algorithm. Exceptions can be made only by those persons who are residents of Schengen countries or have a long-term visa. However, even in this case, the entry permit depends on the decision of border services or airline representatives. This means that this possibility is not guaranteed.» — says the explanation of the embassy. What should citizens of Ukraine with an extended passport do? Due to the changes in the rules, citizens of Ukraine who are residents of Schengen countries must obtain a new foreign passport before returning. This can be done: directly in Ukraine; in consular departments of Ukrainian embassies abroad; in the relevant consulates of Ukraine. It is also worth noting that the embassies of Schengen countries located in Ukraine may refuse to issue a visa to persons who submit documents with an extended passport. How to extend the validity of a foreign passport Extending the validity of a passport is a free consular service that can be obtained at the relevant diplomatic posts. Documents can be submitted on a first-come, first-served basis during the reception hours of the diplomatic institution, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. According to current legislation, such a procedure can be carried out no earlier than 2 months before the expiration of the passport. As part of this procedure, the consular officer applies an official inscription on the extension of the validity of the document for 5 years. To extend the validity of the passport, the following documents must be submitted: original passport and its copy; to renew a child’s passport — the child’s birth certificate and its copy. Therefore, if your foreign passport is about to expire, it is recommended to issue a new document in advance. Changes in border crossing rules mean that traveling with an extended passport may become impossible. Therefore, in order to avoid problems at the border, it is worth taking care of updating the document in the relevant authorities in advance.
