20-30% of convicts can join the Armed Forces of Ukraine: Ministry of Justice

In Ukraine, potentially from 20% to 30% of the total number of convicts can be involved in service in the Armed Forces. About this reported Deputy Minister of Justice Yevhen Pikalov.
“Today, more than 8,300 convicts joined the ranks of the Armed Forces, another 1,000 applications are under consideration. We also mobilized 100 women. If we talk about the potential of this initiative, according to our forecasts, about 20-30% of the total number of convicts in Ukraine can take advantage of this opportunity and come to the defense of the state.” he declared.
Pikalov emphasized that in the conditions of the war with Russia and the constant threat from the aggressor, such an initiative can become a significant source of reserves for strengthening the country’s defense capabilities.
“We consider this process not only as a way to replenish the ranks of defenders, but also as a mechanism for resocialization through the highest manifestation of civic responsibility. The Ministry of Justice and the State Security Service keep this issue under constant control, ensuring transparency and objectivity in the consideration of each application.” he added.
The total number of convicts and persons in custody is currently about 37,000. At the same time, not all of them can be mobilized, as some do not meet the medical or legal criteria.
“For example, they cannot (be included in the ranks of the Armed Forces) – for terrorism, for corruption, sexual crimes, for crimes against the foundations of national security. According to statistics, 57% are convicted of property crimes, 11% – an article on illegal drug trafficking.” Pikalov stressed.
We will remind that in May 2024, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law that provides for the possibility of conditional early release of convicts for their participation in the defense of the country. The law creates additional opportunities for additional staffing of the Armed Forces and other military formations, as well as encourages convicts to correct and fulfill their civic duty in the conditions of armed aggression against Ukraine.
