62.6 km² of Sumy region are under occupation: DeepState

Analytical project DeepState updated map of combat operations in the Sumy region. Currently, 62.6 square kilometers of the territory of the region are marked as occupied by Russian troops. Analysts report that despite a certain stabilization of the situation by the defense forces, intense fighting continues in the region.

“The defense forces managed to somewhat restrain the rapid advance of Russian units deep into Sumy Oblast. At the same time, Ukrainian crews destroy the enemy’s infantry every day and every night. After pushing out the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the territory of the Kursk Oblast, the Russian army aimed to create a so-called “buffer zone” already on the territory of Sumy Oblast, which logically fits into the overall dynamics of the development of events.” — noted in DeepState.

The first attempts of the Russian military to enter the territory of Sumy Oblast were recorded at the beginning of March. The starting point was the village of Sverdlykovo, where Russian units began to dislodge Ukrainian forces from the border zone and create conditions for cutting logistical routes. The advances of the Russian Federation took place through the settlement of Novenke, but they did not give results: due to the fact that the village as such no longer existed, the Russians were forced to take shelter in prepared positions and forest strips. Then the Ukrainian military managed to dislodge them, but the powerful pressure and active use of drones did not allow our defenders to hold their positions for a long time.

Later, the hostilities concentrated near Zhuravka, where Ukrainian units successfully held off attacks for some time and inflicted blows on the enemy along the border line.

DeepState notes that after unsuccessful operations in the Novenki district, Russian troops began moving in the direction of Basivka, seeking to gain a foothold. The defense forces held off the offensive for a long time with the help of drones, and reinforcements were also sent to the area to stabilize the defense line. However, due to the lack of noticeable progress in the previous areas, the Russian units shifted the emphasis of the offensive to the districts of Zhuravka and Veselovka. According to analysts, the enemy found a weak point between Zhuravka and Novenky, which he used to advance — in particular, through forest strips.

“Constant pressure from the infantry and numerical superiority resulted in the enemy being able to advance in this area. Attempts by Russians to break through on ATVs towards Basivka were often observed. Even those attacks that reached the village ultimately did not achieve results: they were all eliminated.” – says the summary of DeepState.

According to the assessment of the project, the Russian troops managed to gain a foothold on the Veselovka – Zhuravka – Novenke – Basivka line. At the same time, they do not stop attempts to break through to Bilovodi, and also continue offensive actions in the direction of the settlement of Loknia, where the situation remains tense.
