A hungry marten left two German cities without electricity: 130 thousand people without electricity

On August 20, residents of the German cities of Ludwigsburg and Kornwestheim witnessed an unexpected power outage caused by a marten. The incident happened early in the morning, around 04:30 local time (05:30 Kyiv time), when a marten damaged electric wires at a substation in Khoenek. This led to blackouts in both cities, leaving about 130,000 people without electricity. writes SWR.

Among the victims were about 100,000 residents of Ludwigsburg and more than 30,000 residents of Kornwestheim. Electricity was restored only at 07:15 local time.

The power outage affected not only residential buildings, but also street lighting, which created some inconvenience and caused anxiety among local residents. Morning trips to work and school became a particular problem, because without light there were difficulties with transport and movement. Although the incident did not lead to serious consequences, it drew attention to the vulnerability of infrastructure even to such seemingly minor threats as wild animals.

This is not the first time a marten has caused such problems. Previously, a similar incident occurred during the Olympics in Paris, when a tailed saboteur damaged fiber optic cables, disrupting communication in nine departments. This case once again reminded of the need for more thorough protection of the infrastructure against such random but potentially serious threats.
