A new strain of coronavirus “FLiRT” has been recorded in Ukraine: symptoms, distribution and risks
According to the Ministry of Health, two women and a man over 60 years old were infected with the new strain.

In July 2024, three cases of infection with a new subvariant of the Omicron coronavirus, known as FLiRT, were registered in Ukraine. About this reported the press service of the Ministry of Health (MoH) on its official Facebook page.
As noted by the chief state sanitary doctor Ihor Kuzin, two women and one man, all over 60 years old, were infected with the new strain. Two cases were recorded in Kyiv, and one more in Ivano-Frankivsk region.
The FLiRT strain, according to preliminary data, is a variant of Omicron that has acquired new mutations in the spike protein. These changes allow the virus to better bind to the body’s cells and avoid the immune response, making it more dangerous, especially for people with weakened immune systems.
Preliminary studies show that vaccination and booster doses remain effective in preventing severe disease caused by the new strain. However, they do not guarantee complete protection against FLiRT infection. This raises additional concerns among experts, as the new strain could pose a serious threat to vulnerable populations.
In connection with the discovery of new cases, the Ministry of Health calls on citizens to be vigilant, to follow recommendations on personal hygiene, wearing masks in public places, and to undergo vaccination and revaccination in a timely manner. In addition, the Ministry of Health is conducting additional research to study the characteristics of the new strain and develop effective countermeasures.
Currently, the situation is under control, but doctors warn about the possibility of further spread of the virus and urge citizens not to delay vaccination. If symptoms such as fever, cough, fatigue or difficulty breathing are detected, it is recommended to consult a doctor immediately.
