A New Yorker generated an AI “lawyer” who was supposed to represent him in court

During an appeals court hearing in New York, a plaintiff in an employment case brought in a virtual attorney created with the help of artificial intelligence to present evidence. About this informs Associated Press.

The incident occurred during the hearing of the lawsuit of 74-year-old Jerome Dewald. During his speech, he stated that he wanted to show the video, which the judge gave permission.

A young man appeared in the video and addressed the court with the words:

“I come here today as a humble pro se (that is, a person representing himself in court) before a panel of five distinguished judges.”

The judge asked if the man in the video was Dewald’s lawyer. He explained that this is not a real person, but an avatar generated by artificial intelligence. The judge expressed indignation, noting that Dewald did not warn about the use of such a tool.

“I don’t like being lied to”, she said and ordered to turn off the video.

Dewald apologized to the court, explaining that he did not have a lawyer and tried to present his arguments on his own. He believed that an AI avatar would be able to convey his position more clearly, without delays or speech errors. According to him, he initially wanted to create a digital copy of himself, but did not have time to complete this process before the meeting. Dewald noted that he was very upset and that the court “reprimanded” him for such an initiative.

We will remind that on March 9, the first church service in the history of Finland took place in Helsinki, the majority of which was created with the help of artificial intelligence. During the service, a plot was presented, dedicated to the fight between good and evil.
