Denmark and the United States have scheduled the first talks after Trump’s statements on Greenland

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen is scheduled to meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio this week. These will be the first high-level talks between the two countries since US President Donald Trump’s statements regarding Greenland, informs Financial Times.

The meeting between Rasmussen and Rubio is scheduled on the sidelines of the meeting of NATO foreign ministers, which will take place on April 3 in Brussels. However, due to tensions in relations between Washington and Copenhagen, the negotiations may be canceled. According to officials, diplomatic contacts between Denmark and the USA are currently kept to a minimum. The US State Department declined to comment on the possibility of the meeting. In January, Rasmussen and Rubio already had a 20-minute phone conversation.

We will remind that after the victory of Donald Trump in the presidential elections in the USA, he again raised the issue of buying Greenland. In his opinion, control over the island is important from the point of view of US security.

Greenland itself, which has the status of a semi-autonomous territory within Denmark, spoke out against possible accession to the USA. There were protests against Trump’s policies. The Danish government also rejects the idea of selling the island.

Recently, US Vice President Jay D. Vance and his wife visited Greenland. During the visit, he stated that the US currently does not plan to increase its military presence on the island, but intends to guarantee its security. Trump, in turn, expressed confidence that the United States will take Greenland under its control. He stated that it “100% will happen” and hinted at the possibility of using force to implement this plan.
