A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Himalayas, killing at least 53 people in the Tibetan town of Shigadze. Tremors were felt in Nepal, India and Bhutan. About this informs DW.
The city of Shigadze suffered significant destruction, in particular, several buildings collapsed. The US Geological Survey recorded the earthquake at a depth of 10 kilometers. Casualties were also reported in Changsuo, Kuluo and Kuoguo townships in Dingri County.
Earth tremors were felt not only in Tibet, but also in neighboring countries. In Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, there are reports of strong tremors that have affected the area near Mount Everest. The earthquake was also felt in the northern regions of India and Bhutan.
Rescue services continue to work, assessing the scale of destruction and the number of victims. Geologists warn about the possibility of aftershocks, which can complicate the situation. About 1,500 rescuers are working on the site, searching for victims under the rubble.
Earthquakes are common in the Himalayan mountain region, but this was the strongest recorded within a radius of 200 kilometers in five years.
