Almost 50,000 coins were put up for auction in Ukraine: what amount do they plan to get?

Scrap metal from the territory of the National Bank is carried out at the expense of the buyer, including transportation costs.

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has announced an auction for the sale of scrap coins with destroyed signs of payment. The total weight of the lot is 48,056.791 kg, and it includes coins of various denominations – from kopecks to hryvnias. This is stated in messages on the “State Auctions. Online” Facebook page.

The starting price of the lot is UAH 2,000,123.64. All associated costs are borne by the future buyer.

“Dispatch of scrap metal from the territory of the National Bank is carried out at the expense of the buyer, including all costs related to transportation, unloading, weighing. The National Bank does not sort coins by materials when destroying the image”, – stated in the message.

Before selling the coins for scrap, the banknote and coin yard of the NBU uses special equipment to destroy the images on the coins. This is done so that they can no longer be used as means of payment. After that, scrap metal is sold through auctions, mainly for remelting.

The lot includes coins with denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 kopecks and 1, 2, 5, 10 hryvnias. The total weight of this scrap metal is more than 48 tons, which makes it significant in terms of volume and value.

All costs related to transportation, unloading and weighing of scrap are borne by the buyer. The NBU does not sort coins by material, so the buyer receives mixed scrap metal.

The auction for the sale of scrap coins from the NBU attracts attention not only because of its scale, but also because of the specificity of the lot. Scrap metal, which results from the destruction of images on coins, is a valuable resource for remelting and can be used in various industries. It is impossible to use these coins as a payment unit, which ensures their safe withdrawal from circulation.
