Almost half of Ukrainian teachers want to leave the profession: ombudsman

Almost half of Ukrainian teachers want to leave the profession. To avoid this, it is necessary to increase the salary of educators and make a number of changes to the legislation. About this stated educational ombudsman Nadiya Leshchyk.

“According to research data, more than 40% of teachers want to leave the profession in the next 5 years. We interviewed young teachers and found out why they left the profession. The first reason is the salary, which does not attract young people. The second they called a large number of reports and papers and an unfavorable atmosphere in the team as a problem. Sometimes the school team does not accept young people and this also needs to be worked on., she noted.

The ombudsman said that her team is working on initiatives to amend the legislation and will seek to increase teachers’ salaries. Leschyk also commented on the discussed idea of leaving students for a second year due to low grades. According to her, this applies only to those children who have significant gaps in knowledge.

“This initiative was taken out of the general context. We really have crazy educational losses, but I propose that the state allocates a subsidy to compensate for educational losses through additional classes in individual subjects, for example, in mathematics or natural sciences, where we lag behind the most. Now this the offer is being considered”, – explained Leschyk.
