As part of the new sanctions, the EU plans to impose a ban on aluminum imports from Russia

The European Commission is preparing the 16th package of sanctions against Russia, which may include a gradual ban on imports of Russian aluminum. About this informs Reuters.

Representatives of the European Commission have already held preliminary consultations with member countries to agree on the details of the sanctions. One of the proposals involves the gradual introduction of a ban on the supply of Russian aluminum.

Before that, the European Union avoided a complete restriction of metal imports from Russia due to the opposition of individual member states. Currently, the sanctions only cover certain aluminum products, such as wire, tube and foil, which represent less than 15% of total aluminum imports into the EU.

Aluminum remains a key material for transportation, packaging, construction and manufacturing of electric vehicle components due to its lightness.

It will be recalled that earlier, ten EU countries, including Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Ireland and Finland, called for an immediate end to the import of Russian gas, in particular liquefied natural gas (LNG).
