Telegram is preparing to launch its own video player, which will become an analogue of YouTube
The Telegram messenger is planning to implement a YouTube analogue — its own video hosting, which will allow users to enjoy video content directly on the platform. The developers have announced a competition to create a new video player, the winner of which will receive a monetary reward of 50,000 dollars. About this reported Telegram press office.
The new media player will be integrated into the mobile version of the iOS application at the first stage, and later it will become available for Android users and the PC version of the messenger.
The main goal is to replace the current AVPlayer with a more modern solution that will work inside the program and allow you to play both video and audio without switching to external browsers.
Key requirements for the player:
- Workability on iOS 12 and later versions;
- Support for HLS streaming;
- Automatic adjustment of video quality according to Internet speed;
- Using hardware acceleration for video playback.
Terms of the competition:
- The player should replace AVPlayer without compromising the performance and stability of the application;
- It is forbidden to use web browsers to play media files, although a hybrid solution with JavaScript for data processing is allowed;
- Support for HLS, fmp4, H264 and AAC formats is mandatory;
- No offline playback requirement.
The evaluation of the participants will be based on the testing of the software code in different conditions, on different iOS devices (versions from 12 to 18). The results of the competition will be announced in November 2024, and the winners may be offered further cooperation with Telegram.
The deadline for submitting works is October 25, 2024, Dubai time. Anyone can participate, regardless of experience or country of residence.
Telegram has not yet revealed whether the new video player will have a recommendation system. If such a feature appears, Telegram could become a serious competitor to YouTube in the video hosting market.
