Carney announced the end of the “era of close relations” between Canada and the United States

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the era of close ties with the United States is over after President Donald Trump imposed massive tariffs on auto imports. About this informs The Guardian.

Carney warned Canadians that Trump’s actions have permanently changed the nature of bilateral relations, and stressed that “there will be no going back,” even if new trade deals are possible.

“The old relationship we had with the United States, based on deepening the integration of our economies and close security and military cooperation, is over.” – he stressed, calling the introduced tariffs unjustified.

Carney said he plans to meet with provincial heads of government and business representatives to discuss a joint response to the trade restrictions, and is expected to announce measures as early as next week.

“Our response to these latest tariffs is to fight, it’s to defend, it’s to build. We will fight the US tariffs with our own trade retaliatory measures that will have maximum impact in the United States and minimum impact here in Canada.”, – emphasized Carney

Canada is also considering introducing excise taxes on exports of raw materials, including oil and potash fertilizers, to protect its economic interests.

“Nothing is off the agenda to protect our workers and our country.” Carney added.
