Trump changed position on immigration, offering “green cards” to foreign graduates of American universities

Former US President Donald Trump proposed to grant a permanent residence permit (“green card”) to foreign students who graduated from American universities. He argues that this way the US will be able to keep the most talented people in the country.
This is reported NewsWeek.
A “green card” gives the right to legal residence and work in the United States, and also opens the way to citizenship. Trump did not specify whether the proposal would apply to students with illegal status or overdue visas.
“They should automatically get a green card as part of their degree to be able to stay in this country.”, Trump said.
According to NewsWeek, there were 5.8 million immigrant students in the U.S. in 2022, accounting for 32% of the total student population.
The proposal contradicts previous statements by Trump, who advocated abolishing the green card lottery and tightening immigration restrictions.
Trump’s other statements
Trump recently blamed Ukraine’s plans to join NATO for provoking Russia’s invasion, claiming that President Biden’s statements pushed for war.
“I have been hearing for 20 years that if Ukraine joins NATO, it will be a real problem for Russia. I have heard this for a long time. I think that’s why this war started…Biden kept saying the wrong things, and one of them was that he said that Ukraine would join NATO…When I heard him say that, I thought, this guy is going to start a war“, the former US president said.
