China symmetrically responded to Trump’s 104% tariff: mutual trade is no longer possible

China continues to respond to the trade actions of the United States based on the principle of symmetry. The amount of mutual duties reached 104%, which makes further trade between the countries impossible. About this informs New York Times.

According to an official statement, starting April 10, China will introduce an additional 54% tariff on imports of American goods. The move is in response to similar 54% tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

The Chinese government’s statement, which was released by the Information Office of the State Council of China, contained sharp criticism of the US trade policy. Beijing accused Washington of “years of protectionism and violation of the trade agreement signed by the two sides at the end of President Trump’s first term.”

The document was released hours after Trump decided to raise tariffs on Chinese goods to 104%, tariffs that he began implementing during his second term in office. This additional 54% was imposed after China did not agree to remove mirror tariffs on American goods by a deadline set by the US president.

China and the United States are back in a tariff war, exchanging tariffs in an “eye for an eye” style that began after Donald Trump returned to the White House in January. At the same time, “the US president has yet to speak with his Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping, more than two months after his inauguration.”

It will be recalled that on April 8, official Beijing declared its readiness to “fight to the end” in the context of the escalation of the trade conflict with the Trump administration, describing the American tariffs as “blackmail”.
