Despite the war and economic decline, Ukraine collects more taxes than in peacetime: Hetmantsev

Danylo Hetmantsev, chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Finance, Taxation and Customs Policy, said that despite martial law, shrinking territories, the flow of refugees and economic difficulties, Ukraine has managed to increase budget revenues compared to pre-war levels. He called this situation unique.
‘In times of war, with a shrinking territory, refugees and a falling economy, we collect more taxes than we did in peacetime,’ Hetmantsev said, stressing the exceptional nature of this situation.
According to him, this achievement was made possible by strengthening tax control, combating tax evasion and smuggling, as well as the coordinated work of tax and customs authorities, despite the circumstances. Hetmantsev noted that the Ukrainian economy continues to work for the defence and support of the population, which is critical in the current environment.
The uniqueness of this situation is also recognised by international experts. The increase in tax revenues amid the war demonstrates the effectiveness of reforms aimed at increasing transparency and fighting corruption in the financial sector. This trend sends a strong signal to international partners willing to provide financial and humanitarian support to Ukraine.
