European brewers say Trump’s tariffs could deprive EU of 100 thousand jobs

Brewers of Europe has expressed concern over the introduction of a 25% tariff on beer imports to the US, which could lead to the loss of up to 100,000 jobs and the closure of breweries across Europe. About this informs Financial Times.
“We call on the European Commission to use all diplomatic channels and through negotiations or in response to find a way to de-escalate this tariff in which we have become a collateral victim.” – said the general secretary of Brewers of Europe, Julia Leferman.
The decision of the Donald Trump administration came as a surprise to the industry. The new tariff exceeds the general 20% rate on imports from the European Union and takes effect this Friday. It is not yet clear whether the duty applies to all beer or only to products in aluminum cans.
“We are trying to understand why beer was classified as an aluminum derivative. We cannot be put in the same row as cables and wires”, – Leferman added.
According to the association, beer exports from EU countries to the USA in 2024 reached 870 million euros. About 100,000 of the two million workers in the industry are at risk.
Innovations will also affect American importers, in particular Constellation Brands, which produces the Corona and Modelo brands. Citi analysts note that the main supplies of aluminum for the production of cans have come from Mexico, Canada and China, so the direct impact on the raw material market will be small.
We will remind that on April 2, US President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on imported goods. During a speech in the Rose Garden of the White House, he displayed a table listing countries and tariff rates ranging from 10% to 50%. The new tariffs cover almost the entire world and will take effect on April 5 and 9.
