Excess E. coli was found in 12% of swimming areas in Ukraine

In 12% of water samples from bathing places in Ukraine, an excess of Escherichia coli was found. About this informs press service of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
Out of 172 water samples taken from June 6-12 from rivers and reservoirs within official beach zones, 21 samples (12.2%) did not meet sanitary standards. The laboratories of the regional centers for disease control and prevention recorded an excess of the LCP (lactose-positive E. coli) index.
If Escherichia coli enters the human body, it is possible to develop intestinal infections, the most common symptoms of which are nausea and diarrhea. Symptoms of an acute intestinal infection that require immediate medical attention include dry mouth and throat, high fever combined with diarrhea and vomiting, cramp-like abdominal pain, and little or no urination.
In addition, during June 6-12, 109 samples of water from rivers and reservoirs within official beaches were examined for chemical indicators, of which 20 samples (18.3%) did not meet the established standards. Specialists of the regional centers for disease control and prevention conduct weekly monitoring of water quality, taking samples from rivers and reservoirs for laboratory studies in order to identify excess indicators that may pose a danger to the population.
