Finland to use AI to monitor Russia’s borders

Finland is equipping the barrier on the border with Russia with video cameras that work with the use of artificial intelligence. About this reported Yle Broadcasting Company.
“These cameras have learned to distinguish between people and animals. That is, animals near the border do not trigger an alarm,”– explained the representative of the Border Guard, Lt. Col. Esa Veikkanen.
In addition to artificial intelligence, the surveillance system also includes day and night vision cameras, infrared devices, and an alert system. They decided to make the structure of the fence one meter higher than the original plan. Construction is planned to be completed by the end of 2026. The total length of the barrier will be 200 kilometers.
Finnish energy companies have also initiated the Resil East project, which involves installing wind turbines with radars along the Russian-Finnish border. Radars mounted on windmills are supposed to perform military monitoring functions. Within the framework of the program, it is planned to install thousands of wind turbines, which will not only generate electricity, but also provide the collection of intelligence data for the needs of the army.
“There are fewer wind farms being built on the eastern border than in other parts of the country because the Defense Forces do not support their deployment in this region.” – says the message.
The Finnish Defense Forces see certain risks in such an initiative, in particular that civilian companies will gain access to equipment belonging to the military department.
