Former Romanian presidential candidate Georgescu to be tried for promoting fascism

The Prosecutor’s Office of Romania completed the pre-trial investigation in the case of far-right politician and ex-presidential candidate Kelin Georgescu and submitted the materials to the court. He is accused of propagandizing fascism, as well as glorifying those responsible for genocide and war crimes. A corresponding statement made public the prosecutor’s office of the country.

The investigation established that from 2020 to 2025, Georgescu actively spread fascist, legionary and xenophobic ideas, doctrines and concepts. He publicly justified the need to establish an authoritarian regime in Romania, excessively idealized the historical past, called for the mobilization of society for the sake of “creating a new man under the cover of Orthodox Christian mysticism.”

The politician also actively formed the cult of Ion Antonescu, the dictator responsible for numerous war crimes, and publicly presented him as a national hero. The prosecutor’s office notes that Georgescu copied Antonescu’s manner of speech and gestures, and in October 2021, during a rally in Bucharest against quarantine restrictions, he demonstrated the legionary salute.

It will be recalled that during the presidential elections in Romania, held in November 2024, Georgescu made it to the second round together with the pro-European candidate Lasconi. The vote was supposed to take place on December 8, but after the release of documents declassified by Romania’s Supreme Council of National Defense, which showed Russian interference in favor of Georgescu, the results of the first round were annulled and the election declared invalid.

On March 9, the Central Election Commission of Romania banned Georgescu from participating in the re-voting.
