Former U.S. Senator Mendez Sentenced to 11 Years in Prison for Bribery and Corruption

A US District Court in New York has sentenced former Democratic Senator Bob Menendez to 11 years in prison for bribery, conspiracy and abuse of office. About this informs Fox News.

“Judge Sidney Stein sentenced disgraced Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez to 11 years in prison, ending his trial”, the message says.

Prosecutors had pushed for a 15-year prison sentence for the 71-year-old politician after he was convicted in July on 16 counts including bribery, extortion, conspiracy and obstruction of justice. Menendez became the first US senator convicted of acting as a foreign agent. His accomplices, Wael Khana and Fred Dybes, received eight and seven years in prison, respectively.

“As proven at trial, the defendants engaged in a corruption and foreign influence scheme of astonishing brazenness, scope, and duration over many years that resulted in extremely serious abuses of power at the highest levels of the legislative branch of the United States government,” – prosecutors noted.
