Germany will send peacekeepers to Ukraine only with Moscow’s permission: Defense Minister Pistorius

Germany is ready to send peacekeepers to Ukraine when the time is right, but this will also require Russia’s consent. This was stated by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius during a speech in Berlin. informs Reuters.

According to him, Germany is ready to play a certain role in securing a potential peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, but it is still too early to talk about the specific format of such participation.

“If there is a ceasefire, then, of course, the Western community, NATO partners, potentially the UN and the EU will have to discuss how to ensure such peace, such a ceasefire. And it is obvious that Germany, as the largest economy in Europe, would play a certain role here.” Pistorius said.

He added that the specific tasks of the peacekeeping forces will depend on the terms of the ceasefire and the mandate to be determined. At the same time, the minister emphasized that the implementation of such a mission requires the approval of both the Ukrainian and Russian sides.

In turn, the Netherlands suggests the possibility of sending an EU peacekeeping mission to Ukraine even without the unanimous decision of all member states, provided a ceasefire agreement is reached.
