Pentagon clarifies plans to support Ukraine before and after Trump takes office

The Pentagon plans to use all available funds to support Ukraine until the end of Joe Biden’s presidential term, i.e. until the inauguration of Donald Trump, which is scheduled for 20 January. This was announced by Deputy Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh during a briefing, Voice of America reports.

Currently, the Ministry of Defence has $6 billion at its disposal to support Ukraine, of which about $4 billion is for the Presidential Decision Authority (PDA), which provides for the supply of weapons from US Army warehouses, and about $2 billion for the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), under which weapons are ordered directly from manufacturers.

Singh also noted that some of the weapons under the PDA programme arrive in Ukraine within days or weeks, while others take longer, depending on availability in US warehouses.

We always look at the capabilities that Ukraine needs on the battlefield, that the Ukrainian military can use and that will make the biggest difference. Today, I don’t have a set of new tools or new things that we’re looking at, but every time we announce an aid package or a new commitment, it’s an investment in the success of the Ukrainians fighting on the battlefield,’ Singh said.

She also emphasised that after the transfer of power, the new Trump administration, together with the Congress, will determine the policy of support for Ukraine in the future. At the same time, she stressed that support for Ukraine has bipartisan support in the US Congress.

Republicans and Democrats have committed to supporting Ukraine financially and with their votes. The new team will work with the Congress, where there is strong support for continued assistance to Ukraine,’ Singh said.
