Guterres and Netanyahu have different assessments of the US attack on Iran

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres made public a statement in which he expressed deep concern over the latest strikes by the United States on the territory of Iran. In particular, we are talking about an attack on facilities related to the Iranian nuclear program, which has already caused a significant response in the international arena. Guterres called on all parties to immediately de-escalate and return to diplomatic ways of resolving the conflict.

In his post on the X social network (formerly Twitter), the UN Secretary General described the American operation as a “dangerous escalation” in the Middle East, where, according to him, the situation is already on the verge of a general escalation. He warned that the further escalation of military tension could have unpredictable consequences – both for the security of the region and for the whole world. Guterres especially emphasized the threat to the civilian population.

“There is a growing risk that this conflict could quickly spiral out of control – with catastrophic consequences for the civilian population, the region and the world,” he wrote.

The UN Secretary General called on member states to de-escalate and fulfill their obligations in accordance with the UN Charter and other norms of international law. He expressed his conviction that the way to resolving the situation cannot be through a military confrontation. Diplomacy is the only acceptable and safe option for resolving the crisis.

“In this perilous hour, it is imperative to avoid the spiral of chaos,” Guterres said.

His statement came amid the reaction of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who, on the contrary, praised Washington’s actions. IN social networks H he thanked US President Donald Trump for participating in the joint operation “Detachment Line”, which, according to the Israeli prime minister, is aimed at destroying Iran’s threatening nuclear capabilities. Netanyahu said that this strike has historical significance and is an example of effective cooperation between the US and Israel in matters of regional security.

“History will record that President Trump acted to strip the world’s most dangerous regime of the world’s most dangerous weapons.” – emphasized Netanyahu.

Amid conflicting assessments by international players, Guterres’ statement was one of the first official diplomatic calls for restraint since the attack.

It will be recalled that in 2024, Israel declared UN Secretary General António Guterres persona non grata and banned him from entering the country due to his lack of condemnation of Iran’s attack on Israel.

“I have declared UN Secretary General António Guterres persona non grata in Israel and banned him from entering the country. Anyone who is unable to unequivocally condemn Iran’s heinous attack on Israel — as the vast majority of countries in the world have done — has no right to set foot on Israeli soil.” stated Israel Katz in the social network Kh.
