IMF acknowledges miscalculation in forecasts of end of war in Ukraine

The International Monetary Fund admitted that it had previously assumed that the Russian-Ukrainian war would end by 2025. About this stated Director of the European Department of the IMF, Alfred Kammer, during the briefing.

Kammer noted that the IMF revised the economic forecast for Ukraine for 2025 due to the uncertainty created by the ongoing conflict. According to him, Russian shelling of the energy infrastructure had a significant impact on the country’s economic growth this year.

This is a reflection of the fact that Russia’s war in Ukraine will continue. We assumed that it would stop earlier. But this did not happen. And these, again, are additional costs for the Ukrainian economy“, Kammer explained.

He also noted the efforts of the Ukrainian team, which continues to ensure macro-financial stability, support business and prepare the ground for recovery and accession to the EU.

Earlier, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, said that during the planning of the state budget for 2024, the IMF predicted the end of the war by the summer. This partly explains the deficit of UAH 500 billion for military needs, which must be covered by the end of the year. The budget for 2024 will be planned taking into account current realities, Shmyhal noted.
