In Chile, due to a large-scale blackout, millions of people were left without electricity

A massive power outage occurred in Chile, leaving millions of people without power. The country’s government declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew, informs Reuters.

The cause of the blackout was an accident on a power line in the north of the country. Interior Minister Carolina Toa ruled out a cyber attack as the cause of the incident.

The power outage covered a large area, including the capital, Santiago, where passengers had to be evacuated from trains due to a stoppage of the subway. Many companies sent their workers home, but congestion on public transport left many people stranded in the city.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that armed forces were deployed to maintain order throughout the country. The head of the National Electricity Coordinator of Chile, Ernesto Huber, noted that there are currently no accurate forecasts for the full restoration of electricity supply, but electricity has already started to appear in the north and south of the country.
