Sweden modernizes 64 thousand bunkers in preparation for nuclear war

In Sweden, a large-scale modernization of civilian shelters has begun: all 64,000 existing bunkers in the country must be brought into a state that will protect the population in the event of a nuclear attack. This was announced by the Swedish Civil Protection Service (MSB), informs PICTURE.
The government has allocated 100 million Swedish kroner, which is about 9 million euros, for infrastructure renewal. According to the MSB, up to 7 million people, which is the majority of the country’s population (Sweden’s population is approximately 10.5 million people), will be able to find shelter in the upgraded storage facilities.
There are two types of shelters in the country: the first are built into residential buildings, the second are so-called “fellbunkers” that are cut into rock or built from special strong concrete. Such structures have the ability to protect not only from blast waves and debris, but also from radiation contamination, chemical and biological weapons.
Renovation of storage facilities has already started — repairs are being carried out in 25 of the largest bunkers in the country. This process is part of the wider concept of “total defense” implemented by the Swedish government. It provides that in case of war every citizen should be informed about his role and ready to act.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the country intends to increase defense spending from the current 2.4% to 3.5% of GDP by 2030. He called this decision “the largest defense buildup since the Cold War.” We will remind you that in 2023, Sweden finally abandoned the policy of neutrality and joined NATO.
