According to the publication, the idea of dividing Ukraine into two zones, one of which would be oriented towards the West, comes from the Scandinavian countries. They refer to the experience of Germany, which after the Second World War was divided into two states: West Germany, which joined NATO, and East Germany, which was under the control of the USSR.
In such a scenario, the western regions of Ukraine would have a pro-Western development vector and could become NATO members in the future. At the same time, the occupied territories would remain temporarily outside the borders of Ukraine.
As the publication notes, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, is probably inclined to support such an approach. Recently, he expressed the opinion that in order to stop the hot phase of the war, it is necessary to bring under the “NATO umbrella” that part of Ukraine that is not under the control of Russia.
