In Mexico, a mayoral candidate was shot dead during a live broadcast

In the Mexican state of Veracruz, during a live broadcast of an election rally, the candidate for the position of mayor of Tequistepec, Yesenia Lara Gutierrez, was shot dead. About this informs CNN.

During the Facebook broadcast, Yesenia Lara Gutierrez was seen walking the streets of Tequistepec, greeting residents. People were smiling and shouting slogans when suddenly shots rang out, drowning out their voices. In the video, which remained available on Lara’s page the next day, approximately 20 gunshots can be heard. Yesenia Lara Gutierrez and three other people died as a result of the shooting.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the attack. She said the government is coordinating with local authorities in Veracruz and is ready to provide federal assistance if needed, including in cooperation with the state Attorney General’s Office.

“No office is worth a human life. We will find those responsible for this cowardly murder of the candidate and his supporters in Tequistepec”, – stated the governor of the state of Veracruz, Rocio Nale.

The incident became another example of political violence in Mexico. In February 2024, a congressional candidate from the ruling Morena party was shot dead in the state of Morelos. And in May of the same year, Jose Alfredo Cabrera Barrientos, a candidate for mayor of the city of Coyuca de Benitez, was killed during a meeting with voters.
