In South Korea, suspended President Yoon Suk-yeol was released from custody

A court in Seoul decided to release from custody the suspended President of South Korea, Yoon Seok-yeol. This decision was supported by the prosecutor’s office, informs Yonhap.
The Seoul Central District Court granted Yoon Seok-yeol’s defense request for his release. The judges reasoned this by the fact that the prosecutor’s office filed official charges of mutiny several hours late. At the same time, disagreements arose between the court and the prosecutor’s office regarding the risk of destroying evidence.
Yoon Seok Yeol’s release also required approval from the prosecutor’s office. Investigators had the opportunity to appeal the court’s decision, but did not use this right.
We will remind that at the beginning of December 2024, the president of South Korea declared martial law in the country. It was not related to an external threat, but related to an internal situation. Although the martial law lasted only a few hours, it caused a serious political crisis in the country. Law enforcement agencies opened a criminal case against Yoon Seok Yeol, after which he was removed from his position.
On January 1, a court in South Korea issued a warrant for his arrest, but the security forces could not detain him due to the resistance of the presidential guard. Later, Yoon Seok Yeol was still arrested, and he was held in a detention center until the decision to release him was made.
