South Korea launches presidential impeachment procedure

The opposition parties of South Korea submitted to the National Assembly a draft law on the impeachment of President Yoon Seok-yeol. About this reported Yonhap agency.

The bill was supported by 191 deputies from six opposition parties, including the Toburo Democratic Party, which won the spring elections. Representatives of the ruling party “Power of the People” did not participate in the discussion of the initiative.

The question of impeachment is expected to be brought before the parliament on December 5, and the vote will take place on December 6 or 7. In South Korea’s 300-seat National Assembly, the presidential party Civic Power controls 108 seats. The support of two-thirds of the deputies is required to declare impeachment. If the initiative receives the required number of votes, the matter will be referred to the Constitutional Court.

In court, six out of nine judges need to vote “yes” to remove Yoon Seok-yeol from the post of president. While the case is pending, the president’s powers will be suspended and his duties will be temporarily performed by the prime minister.

Earlier, South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun resigned. According to media reports, he was one of those who recommended to President Yoon Seok-yeol to declare martial law on December 3.
