In the Dominican Republic, the roof of a night club collapsed during a concert. As a result of the tragedy, at least 79 people died, and more than 160 were injured. About this informs AR.

The concert was attended by politicians, athletes and other famous people. Among the dead are the governor of Monte Cristi province, Nelson Cruz, sister of MLB star Nelson Cruz, and baseball players Octavio Dotel and Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera. Rescuers spent almost 12 hours sorting through the rubble in search of victims.

At first, the relatives of the singer Ruby Perez, who performed in the club, reported about his rescue, but later it turned out that this information was false. At that time, rescue services continued to search for him. The performer’s manager, Enrique Paulino, noted that the performance began around midnight and the collapse occurred an hour after the start. As a result, the band’s saxophonist died.

“It happened so fast. I managed to drive into a corner.” Paulino said, adding that at first he thought it was an earthquake.

Nearly 12 hours after the roof of the nightclub collapsed, rescuers continued to pull survivors from the rubble, asking bystanders to remain quiet to hear faint cries for help. Firefighters removed concrete debris and used sawn wooden planks to lift the heavy structures as the air was filled with the sound of tools breaking through the concrete.
