In the United States, temporary protection status was canceled for more than 300 thousand Venezuelans

The administration of US President Donald Trump canceled the temporary protection status of more than 300,000 Venezuelans in the US. Thus, they became vulnerable to possible deportations in the coming months, informs The New York Times.

The decision is part of the Trump administration’s larger strategy to tighten immigration enforcement. As part of this strategy, it is planned to stop programs that allow legal entry of migrants, as well as to freeze the system of providing assistance to refugees.

Under the new rules, Venezuelans who received temporary protection status in 2023 will lose it 60 days after the official announcement of the program’s cancellation. Human rights activists expressed outrage at the move, calling it illegal because TPS cancellations are only allowed after the status expires.

“The Trump administration’s attempt to rescind the TPS extension put in place by the Biden administration is completely illegal,” said Achilan Arulanantham, director of the Center for Immigration Law and Policy at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law.

Such a decision may lead to an increase in the number of persons who will remain without official immigration status in the United States.
