Iran and Russia plan to sign a new strategic partnership agreement

Russia and Iran are preparing to sign a new strategic partnership agreement that could be signed even before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump. About this informs Newsweek.

The signing of the agreement between Tehran and Moscow is expected at the end of January. The deal is likely to be signed just days before Trump’s January 20 inauguration. This demonstrates the desire of Russia and Iran to consolidate their efforts in response to increased international pressure and isolation.

The draft agreement was discussed for several years. Back in 2022, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced the completion of work on a “major interstate agreement”, however, specific details remained unknown. The new agreement is designed to replace the 20-year strategic partnership agreement signed between the two states in 2001 and extended in 2020.

In October 2024, a few days after Vladimir Putin’s meeting with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian at the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that the treaty was ready for signing. Lavrov emphasized that the document will consolidate the commitments of the two countries in the field of defense cooperation and joint efforts to ensure regional and global stability.
