In South Korea, they began to produce laser weapons to counter drones: the cost of a shot is $1.5 million.
The new device is silent and invisible, it does not require separate ammunition and can only work with electricity.
South Korea has begun mass production of laser weapons capable of shooting down small drones. The cost of one shot will be only 1.5 dollars. About this informs CNN.
The new laser weapon was named Block-I. It is able to hit small drones and multicopters at a short distance with laser beams that are difficult to notice until the moment of the shot.
According to South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), the device is invisible and silent, requires no separate munitions, and can only operate with electricity.
DAPA also said that future versions of Block-I — Block-II — will be capable of hitting much larger targets, including aircraft and ballistic missiles. These versions will have improved power and longer range.
The Block-I was deemed operational last year after a successful test in which the weapon hit 100% of its targets. The development of the installation lasted 5 years and required an investment of more than 36 million dollars.
As CNN notes, the appearance of these weapons is extremely timely, as on the battlefield in Ukraine, the Middle East and elsewhere, small drones have demonstrated the ability to disable or destroy expensive military equipment, including tanks.
