Israel and Lebanon on the road to a cessation of hostilities

Israel has tentatively agreed to a cease-fire in Lebanon and approved key provisions of a joint proposal developed with the United States. About this informs The Times of Israel.

According to the message, Washington and Beirut note that the final decision has not yet been made, as a number of controversial issues need to be resolved. However, Israel supported the basic principles of the proposal, which had already been passed on to Lebanon.

The proposal includes three key stages:

  • The announcement of a cease-fire followed by the withdrawal of Hezbollah fighters north of the Litani River.
  • Withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon.
  • Negotiations between Israel and Lebanon regarding the demarcation of disputed border territories.

Control over the implementation of the agreement will be entrusted to an international body under the leadership of the United States.

Jerusalem expects to receive guarantees from Washington that will confirm Israel’s right to military action in case of violation of the agreement by Hezbollah.

White House Special Representative Amos Hochstein, for his part, warned both sides that if the negotiations drag on, the US may end its mediation efforts. According to sources, this issue needs to be resolved in the near future.
