Japan plans to replace USAID in Ukraine’s energy and infrastructure projects

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is considering the possibility of financing energy and infrastructure programs in Ukraine, which were previously supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This was announced during the 5th Ukrainian-Japanese forum organized by the “New Europe” Center. stated Hideki Matsunaga, head of JICA’s Ukrainian office.

According to him, the approaches of JICA and USAID are different, so it will not be easy to fully continue some initiatives, especially in the legal field and financing of civil society.

“But we would like to see what gaps there are in the energy sector and try to fill them as much as possible. Of course, we have some budget constraints, but we would like to do more. Of course, we have to think seriously about the energy industry and infrastructure, and we will look at those areas.” – noted Hideki Matsunaga.

It will be recalled that on January 20, US President Donald Trump signed a decree suspending all foreign aid programs for 90 days pending inspections to determine whether they meet his political goals.
