Events on this day:

In 1815, the historic Battle of Waterloo took place (a settlement in Belgium, 20 kilometers south of Brussels) – a battle in which Napoleon’s army was defeated by English and Prussian troops.

They say that history is written by the victors, but this does not apply to Napoleon! Victor Hugo said about Waterloo: “It was not a battle. It was a change of direction in the universe.”

It was in this battle that the famous phrase appeared: “The Guard dies, but does not give up!” It was uttered by the French general Cambronn in response to the appeal of the English colonel Hellkett, who was impressed by the bravery of the French guardsmen: “Brave Frenchmen, surrender!”. It is said that the general also added the word “Shit”, but it is not so important. After that, the entire square was destroyed by a volley of British artillery. Of course, there were almost no survivors. General Cambronn himself, having received serious injuries. He was taken prisoner in an unconscious state and taken to England.
