Kharkiv counts on UNESCO’s support in restoring the State Industry building after Russian attack

Kharkiv hopes to receive UNESCO’s support in restoring the State Industry building, which was damaged by a recent Russian air strike. This was stated by Mayor Igor Terekhov.

He stressed that for Kharkiv, Derzhprom is not just an architectural landmark, but a symbol of a city with a deep history. Speaking to journalists, Terekhov recalled that his grandfather worked on the construction of Derzhprom, so this issue is of particular importance to him.

It is the city’s business card, so we will officially apply to UNESCO. Our international department is working to get this process started,’ Terekhov said, as quoted by Gvar.

The initiative was joined by the head of the Kharkiv regional military administration, Oleh Syniehubov, who added that negotiations are currently underway with international partners to raise funding for the restoration of Derzhprom.

In the evening, at around 21:00, Russian troops struck the centre of Kharkiv. One of the FAB-500 bombs hit the State Industrial Building, an architectural monument of national importance that is on the preliminary UNESCO World Heritage List. The strike damaged the third floor of the building, and the blast wave hit neighbouring buildings: the rehabilitation department of a medical institution, two residential buildings, the building of the Economic Court of Appeal, two educational institutions, a bank, several restaurants and 7 cars.

Nine people were injured in the attack, including five men, one of them an on-duty police officer, and four women. An 18-year-old girl, who happened to be near the site of the attack, was hospitalised in moderate condition.
