Lavrov suggested that Hungary work together to protect “minorities discriminated against by Ukraine”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, believes that Russia and Hungary have a “common problem” regarding the situation with their minorities in Ukraine, and offered to cooperate on this issue. That’s what he’s about stated in an interview with the Hungarian publication Magyar Nemzet.
In his statement, Lavrov repeated Russian propaganda claims about the alleged “persecution and killing of Russians” in Ukraine and the violation of the rights of the Russian-speaking population, which the Kremlin uses as a justification for the illegal annexation of Crimea, the conflict in Donbas and a full-scale war.
“Other ethnic groups, including Hungarians, Romanians, Poles, Bulgarians, Armenians, Belarusians and Greeks, are subject to forced Ukrainization. Budapest is well aware of this problem. Now Russia and Hungary are openly speaking out in defense of their compatriots. And we can join forces on this issue.”Lavrov noted.
We will remind you that in the “negotiation framework” the European Union put forward a number of conditions before the start of negotiations regarding Ukraine’s membership in the EU, in particular regarding the protection of national minorities. Hungary has often used this issue as a tool to block Ukraine’s European integration progress.
Due to Budapest’s veto, the last EU summit failed to reach a consensus on further rapprochement with Ukraine. However, the remaining 26 EU countries agreed to support the start of accession negotiations and took note of the European Commission’s assessment of Ukraine’s readiness to open the “Basics” cluster.
