Japan is one of the largest international donors currently supporting Ukraine economically. Given the country’s legislation, Japan cannot provide military aid to other countries, however, the government plans to increase the amount of economic support.
Prime Minister Kishida Fumio should announce the exact amount of the new tranche for Ukraine next week, during the G7 summit, which is being hosted by Italy this year. The head of the Japanese government plans to meet with Volodymyr Zelenskyi and sign the relevant agreement.
“Government sources report that Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are preparing to hold talks and sign a document on the sidelines of this year’s G7 summit,” –Japanese publications report citing government sources.
The President of Ukraine was invited to participate in the G7 summit. Zelenskyi will speak during the session devoted to the situation in Ukraine.
Most of the funds provided by Japan as part of the new aid package will be directed to the restoration of Ukraine’s energy sector. In addition, Kishida Fumio should once again confirm the continuation of tough economic sanctions against Russia.
The last time the head of the Japanese government met with Zelensky was in May of last year, when the country hosted the G7 summit in Hiroshima.
It was previously reported that in 2024, Japan will provide Ukraine with over $12 billion in financial aid.
