Events on this day:
1742 – the world’s first indoor swimming pool was opened in London.
1908 – Ian Lancaster Fleming was born – writer, literary father of agent 007 James Bond, British journalist, naval intelligence officer.
Flemming was born in London in a rich noble family. Contemporaries assure that he copied the image of a super agent from himself, although his main specialty is a banker (in this direction he was quite successful).
He worked as a journalist and even went on a business trip to the USSR in 1933 to write an article about the case of six subway workers who were accused of sabotage. He wrote an article for Reuters, but something was missing… And then the journalist decided to visit Stalin and take an interview. Stalin refused and put his signature on the letter requesting a meeting. Fleming kept this autograph.

During the Second World War, he became a scout. His activities during this period are quite vague, but it is known that it was Fleming who created a successful commando unit, and Fleming’s reports were read by the entire command – they were so vividly written.
After the war, he took up writing books and was successful again. Ian Fleming wrote 14 novels, the main character of which (James Bond) at one time overshadowed even Sherlock Holmes and brought its creator a good income. During Fleming’s lifetime, 30 million copies of his books were sold and twice as many were sold within two years of his death. Based on the works of Ian Fleming, 25 screen adaptations were made.
Fleming died in his castle in 1964.
