Holidays and commemorative dates

Day of the State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection — a holiday established by the decree of the President of Ukraine in 2021, designed to celebrate the important role of specialists who ensure the protection of state information resources and communications.

Day of employees of publishing houses, printing and book distribution — a holiday celebrated in Ukraine since 1999, honoring those who create and distribute books, magazines, newspapers and other printed products.

Today is also celebrated: World Surgery Day, World Tarot Day, International Plastic Free Day, International Steppe Day, World Independence Week for Colonial Countries and Peoples, International Day of Heroes of the Struggle Against Totalitarianism, World Thyroid Day, Africa Day, World Interior Day and Philology Day. In addition, today is International Missing Children’s Day and World Fish Migration Day.  On May 25, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine celebrates the third beheading of John the Baptist in a new style, and also honors Archbishop Innokenty of Kherson.

Events on this day:

1926 — Simon Petliura, a Ukrainian political and military figure, head of the Directorate of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, was killed in Paris.

1996 – Czech athlete Jan Zhelezny set a world record in the javelin throw – 98 m 48 cm, which still remains unsurpassed.

1996 – in Košice, Slovakian strongman Yu. Barbarych demonstrated incredible strength by pulling a 327-ton train on himself for a record distance of 8.2 meters.

1996 — a ceremonial opening of the restored monument to Princess Olga, a symbol of wisdom and statesmanship of Ukraine, took place in Kyiv.

2020 – the death of George Floyd as a result of brutal police actions in Minneapolis (USA) became a catalyst for mass protests against racial discrimination and police arbitrariness around the world.
