MES continues to discuss cancellation of gold and silver medals in schools

Discussions are currently ongoing in Ukraine regarding the cancellation of awarding students with gold and silver medals. This initiative is being considered by central government and local self-government bodies in the field of education. As reported by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in response to UNN’s request, active work is underway to revise the legal acts that provide for the recognition of participants in the educational process.
According to Article 16 of the Law of Ukraine “On Comprehensive General Secondary Education”, forms of awarding students include letters of commendation, diplomas, as well as gold and silver medals. However, the possibility of canceling these awards is currently under discussion.
Education ombudsman Serhiy Gorbachev suggested reviewing the system of awarding graduates, noting that over the past six years, the number of medalists in Ukraine has increased by 141.36%. However, this increase does not reflect the real level of quality of education, and the medals do not give any advantage when entering higher education institutions.
The Minister of Education and Science, Oksen Lisovyi, previously stated at the Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen that the issue of canceling the awarding of medals needs to be brought up for public discussion in order to get a broad public opinion on this issue.
