Microsoft abandons the “blue screen of death” in Windows

Microsoft has decided to do away with the well-known “blue screen of death” message that appeared during sudden system restarts in Windows. It was on the company’s blog announced launching a new version of this screen that will now be black.
A new black screen that will inform users about critical crashes will be available this summer for devices running Windows 11 version 24H2. Microsoft’s statement described the update as a “simpler” and “faster” disaster recovery system. According to Microsoft developer Raymond Chen, the “blue screen of death” appeared in the early 1990s and has since become one of the most famous symbols of system errors in Windows.
In addition to the color change, Microsoft announced an update to the user interface in line with the design of Windows 11 and reducing the idle time on restart to two seconds for most users.
“This change is part of a broader effort to reduce crashes in the event of unexpected restarts,” – Microsoft explained.
It will be recalled that the “blue screen of death” gained special attention in July 2024, when an error in the CrowdStrike update caused a global failure of computer systems. CrowdStrike President and CEO George Kurtz commented X has a massive outage on Windows devices caused by the company’s software update. He emphasized that this is not a cyber security incident or a hacker attack, but a technical error on the part of the company itself.
