Military man gets 10 years in prison for stealing equipment worth 4.5 million hryvnias

The Lebedyn district court of the Sumy region issued a verdict in the case of a serviceman who appropriated military equipment intended for the needs of an assault company. The officer was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The amount of stolen property exceeds 4.5 million hryvnias, informs DBR press office.
The investigation established that at the end of 2024, the officer responsible for the logistics of the unit received a batch of equipment, which included night vision devices and binoculars, intended for manning the assault company. Instead of transferring this equipment to military personnel, he decided to dispose of the property in his own interests – he hid what he received and tried to sell it through underground channels.
The operative intervention of the law enforcement officers made it possible to establish the fact of embezzlement and to return part of the stolen equipment in the amount of more than 4 million hryvnias. Thanks to this, it was possible to prevent the loss of critical equipment that could affect the combat effectiveness of front-line units.
The court found the officer guilty of committing a criminal offense provided for in part. 4 Art. 410 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — appropriation of military property under martial law. In addition to the main punishment, the court also satisfied a civil claim for compensation for damages caused to the state. The public prosecution in the case was supported by the Sumy specialized prosecutor’s office in the field of defense of the Central region.
