Moldova imposes a state of emergency in the energy sector

The Parliament of Moldova approved the introduction of a state of emergency in the energy sector for a period of 60 days. About this informs NewsMaker.
56 deputies of the ruling Action and Solidarity party (PAS) voted for this decision, while 17 representatives of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists spoke against and two abstained. The state of emergency will come into effect on December 16.
The main reason for such a step was the uncertainty with the supply of Russian gas to Moldova after the beginning of 2025. Moldova currently receives gas from Russia under a contract valid until the end of October 2026. However, starting in the fall of 2022, Gazprom significantly reduced the volume of supplies to 5.7 million cubic meters per day, which is significantly less than the country’s winter needs.
Since the end of last year, all Russian gas has been flowing to Transnistria, where it is used for household needs and electricity production at the Moldovan DRES. It is consumed both on the right and on the left bank of the Dniester. At the same time, payment for the delivered gas is not made.
According to the current contract, Gazprom must supply gas to the border of Moldova. An alternative supply route could be the trans-Balkan gas pipeline through Turkey. It is noted that December 16 is the deadline for “Gazprom” to reserve capacity for supplying gas to Moldova via this route.
