Naftogaz signs first agreement to purchase Azerbaijani gas

The Naftogaz group concluded the first agreement on the purchase of Azerbaijani natural gas with the SOCAR Energy Ukraine company, which is part of the SOCAR group. About this reported “Naftogaz” group press office.

As noted in the message, for the first time the test supply of gas is carried out via the Trans-Balkan route, which passes through Bulgaria, Romania and to the Ukrainian border.

“This is a small but strategically important step that paves the way for long-term cooperation. It is also another example of diversifying supply sources and strengthening Ukraine’s energy security.” Serhiy Koretsky, Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz of Ukraine, emphasized.

At the beginning of June, the Azerbaijani company SOCAR signed a long-term contract with the German state-owned company SEFE for the supply of 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas every year. In addition, Azerbaijan continues to supply gas to a number of European countries, including Bulgaria, Hungary, Greece, Georgia, Italy, Romania, North Macedonia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia. According to the results of 2024, the volume of Azerbaijani gas exports to Europe amounted to 12.9 billion cubic meters.

It will be recalled that operators of gas transport systems in Bulgaria, Greece, Moldova, Romania and Ukraine have developed a mechanism for the supply of natural gas from Greece to Ukraine through the Trans-Balkan Corridor. In particular, the companies Bulgartransgaz EAD (Bulgaria), DESFA SA (Greece), Transgaz SA (Romania), VestMoldTransgaz SRL (Moldova) and Ukrainian OGTSU offered a route package product for gas transportation in the period from June to October 2025. This route is aimed at ensuring the supply of gas from the territory of Greece to Ukraine.
