National Cancer Institute launches new linear accelerator

At the National Cancer Institute (NIR) in Kyiv, the new Elekta Harmony linear accelerator designed for high-precision radiation therapy of oncological patients has started work. The first patients are already being treated on the new equipment. About this informs press office of the Ministry of Health.

The equipment was purchased by the SE “Medical Procurement of Ukraine” at the request of the Ministry of Health. Its installation was made possible thanks to preparatory measures, including the construction of a protective bunker, installation of the device, training of personnel and obtaining the necessary licenses from the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspection of Ukraine.

This is already the second linear accelerator operating at the NIR. With its launch, the daily capacity of the radiation therapy department will increase to 120-150 patients, which is an important step to ensure uninterrupted access to treatment and high-tech medical care.

“Elekta Harmony” is a modern Swedish linear accelerator designed for precise targeted radiation therapy. It supports different radiation techniques, allows the use of several energy levels and types of imaging, which allows you to adapt the treatment to the individual needs of the patient and reduce the impact on healthy tissues. The power of the device is 6 MeV, which provides the possibility of treating both adults and children.

The session lasts up to 15 minutes and is held daily. The duration of the course is determined individually depending on the diagnosis. As noted in the NIR, the increase in the number of accelerators makes it possible to expand the scope of care for patients who need radiation therapy. In addition, the new equipment allows total body irradiation (TBI), which is important for the treatment of a wide range of oncological diseases.
